The world’s first brick timber flooring company has opened its first retail store in London and the new space, called The Brick Factory, is being built in the heart of the city.
The brick factory, in a former quarry in the Old City, is expected to create 250 jobs and will house the company’s brick, mortar and timber products, said the firm’s managing director, Tom Stadt.
“Our aim is to become one of the top 10 brick retailers in the world and have a presence in every major European city in a few years,” he told reporters on Friday.
“It will create around 25 jobs in our London factory and we want to add at least another 15 jobs in the next two years,” said Stadburt.
“It’s going to be an investment in our future, but in a positive way, we hope.”
Brick Factory, a new brick and mortar production facility in London, is one of five new brick, wood and fabric factories planned for the UK in the coming years, according to Stadnter.
The company also plans to build an office, which will have its own floor, and plans to open a shop in London’s new Kings Cross shopping centre.
Stadt said the company would be expanding its brick and timber business in London to more than 250 jobs, adding that the company has “over 300 suppliers” in the UK.
“We will build our London brick and wood manufacturing capacity in the area of 60,000 square feet, and in the new Kings Crossing shopping centre, which is going to open in 2021, we will have more than 2,000 workers in the building,” he said.
The Brick Factory is located in a renovated former quarry, which was built in 1894 to make bricks for the London Underground.
It has a capacity of around 250,000 bricks, which are then used to make the brick used in the foundation of the tower, Stadtr said.
“This is an opportunity for Brick Factory to be a part of London’s future and provide more employment in this vital sector,” he added.
“The Brick factory is going in because we believe in this city, and we believe London is in need of new buildings, new infrastructure and new jobs.”
Bricks are used in a variety of industries including construction, manufacturing and transport.
Stadipt said the bricks were sourced from countries around the world, including Brazil, Russia and the Philippines.
“In London, we use bricks from a number of different countries including Brazil and Russia, and the people of the UK also use them,” he explained.
“A lot of the bricks we use are imported from the Philippines and we import our bricks from China.”
There are about 2,600 brick factories in the United Kingdom, and Brick Factory will be our largest manufacturing site.
“I think we will be one of these, and there are lots of people that are excited about it,” he concluded.
